Overview
A facelift addresses sagging of the lower face, jawline and neck by lifting the underlying tissue layer and removing excess skin. It does not treat skin texture, pigmentation or volume loss on its own; these may be addressed separately.
The extent of the procedure, whether the neck is included, and whether other procedures are combined are decided with you at the consultation.
Procedures
- FaceliftLower face and jawline
- Neck liftLoose neck skin and bands
- Mini or limited liftFor milder sagging, where appropriate
- CombinedWith eyelid surgery or fat transfer, where appropriate
Who is it suitable for?
Adults in good general health with sagging of the face or neck, realistic expectations, and no conditions that impair healing. Smokers are asked to stop for the period the surgeon specifies.
Surgery is only offered after the surgeon has assessed you in person and you have had time to consider the information.
What happens
- ConsultationThe surgeon examines you, discusses your goals and explains the options, limits and risks. Photos are taken for your medical record only.
- PlanningPre-operative tests and instructions are arranged. You receive a written plan and consent form.
- SurgeryPerformed at a licensed partner hospital under the anaesthesia agreed with you. The length of the operation depends on the procedure.
- RecoveryYou go home with written instructions and scheduled follow-up visits with your surgeon.
Results and how they develop
Swelling hides the result at first; the face settles over the following months and scars, placed around the ear and in the hairline, fade over a longer period. A facelift does not stop ageing; the face continues to change over time.
Results vary from person to person.
Recovery
Dressings and, if used, drains are managed at follow-up visits. Bruising and swelling are expected and numbness around the ears is common for a period. Activity, sun exposure and hair treatments are restricted for a period set by your surgeon.
Return to work depends on the procedure and your surgeon's advice.
Risks and complications
All surgery carries risks, including those of anaesthesia. Your surgeon discusses every risk, and how it is managed, at the consultation before you consent.
Common
Swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, tightness, scars that fade over time.
Uncommon
Bleeding under the skin, infection, hair loss near scars, asymmetry, poor scarring, the need for revision.
Rare but serious
Injury to facial nerves causing weakness, which is usually temporary but can be permanent; skin loss, especially in smokers.
